The Best Way to Detect a Liar

Tom had always been a pretty decent poker player, or so he thought.
But tonight, things were not going well. 💀

His luck had run out, and his stack of chips was dwindling fast.

Desperate to turn things around, Tom decided to make a bold move. Although he was dealt a mediocre hand, he went ALL-IN — hoping to scare off his opponents and win a big pot.

But as soon as he pushed his chips into the middle of the table, he felt a wave of nervousness wash over him. He was bluffing, and he suspected his opponents could tell.

Sure enough, one of the other players — a grizzled old-timer with a wry smile — raised an eyebrow and leaned back in his chair.

Tom could practically hear the man’s thoughts: “Kid — I’m calling bullsh*t.”

Tom tried to maintain his composure, but he could feel his heart racing and his palms sweating. He stole a glance at his opponent, hoping they couldn’t detect his feelings of weakness.

But the old-timer seemed as calm and collected as ever, his face chiseled and unmoving. He was staring at Tom.

Tom could feel his resolve crumbling. The old man had gotten him.

After winning all of Tom’s chips, the old man wanted to help Tom. So he told Tom that he had a “TELL” — a non-verbal gesture that indicated he was lying — or “bluffing” as they call it in poker.

“You need to be able to read people’s faces and bodies,” said the old man.

Creative lying is part of playing poker, and being able to tell if someone is “bluffing” is also part of the game.

So how do you tell if someone is lying to you by observing their facial expressions and body language?

When someone is lying to you, they may display behaviors coming from their emotional oddities — such as discomfort, stress, or fidgeting.

Certain nonverbal signs — like excessive blinking or irregular eye contact — may indicate deceit.

Detecting a liar can be a difficult task, as there is no single behavior or sign that can guarantee someone is lying.

However, there are several clues and behaviors that can indicate someone is being dishonest. Here are some tips to help you detect a liar:

Pay attention to body language. People who are lying may exhibit signs of discomfort or nervousness, such as fidgeting, avoiding eye contact, and touching their face or neck.

Look for inconsistencies in their story. If someone is lying, they may struggle to keep their story straight, leading to inconsistencies or contradictions in what they say.

Listen to their tone of voice. Liars may sound less confident or persuasive when they’re lying, and their voice may sound strained or unnatural.

Ask follow-up questions. People who are lying may struggle to provide details or answer follow-up questions about their story.

Observe their behavior. Liars may try to distance themselves from the situation by changing the subject, deflecting blame, or getting defensive.

Trust your gut. Sometimes you get a gut feeling can tell you if someone is being dishonest. That’s your sixth sense of intuition. If something feels off, it’s worth exploring further.

Some people have mastered the ability to lie to your face and have no “tells” to be able to protect yourself from the falsehood.

But for most, their internal struggle with lying will impact their non-verbal communication.

And you can tune into that.

Just remember — lie detection is complex and takes practice and training. By observing and using critical thinking skills, you can have tools to assess the truth.

Train your brain.

Don’t let negative thinking hold you back any longer.
